There’s a movement that’s gaining momentum in Chicago and other forward-thinking cities around the country that’s infusing a new and unique energy toward solving the most intractable and chronic urban challenges – public safety, food deserts, recycling, housing and education among them. The Civic Technology movement pulls IT professionals, citizen and professional advocates, policy wonks, academics and everyday people together in a variety of civic hacks, competitions, coding camps, discussion panels open to the public, and many other forums on behalf of the public good.
Growing out of a number of other movements like open source coding, open gov., open data and fanned by the opportunity to reach a broad audience through social media channels like Facebook and Twitter, civic tech has created a populist movement around the power of technology to transform lives.
Join us as Adam Hecktman, Microsoft’s Director of Technology & Civic Innovation for Chicago, and Pat Maher, Director of Civic Engagement at SPR, discuss this evolving ecosystem and ways that it’s impacting the disability community along with other historically marginalized groups and opening up channels of change and influence.
