Join ITKAN on Thursday, June 13 as we continue to dive deeper into the Netflix techumentary series Liquid Science. In the episode “Ocean Blues”, host GZA explores the great unexplored depths of the Earth’s oceans. At our next meeting, we will explore the great bodies of water closer to our home. Technology behind conservation and management of the Great Lakes is an important aspect of living near them. Environmental Scientist Dr. Kuldip Kumar from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) will join us to discuss the technologies behind their process as well as goals of the MWRD for the future. We will explore the technology behind the challenges and solutions of water management in the Great Lakes.
Dr. Kuldip Kumar is Principal Environmental Scientist in the Monitoring and Research Department of MWRD Chicago. He was more than 25 years of experience in the area of water quality especially fate and transport of nutrients and other environmental stressors like pharmaceuticals and personal care products. For the last 5 years, his focus has been on evaluating and developing new technologies to recover resources from wastewater with a focus on nutrients removal and recovery. He manages research program on utilizing algae to recover nutrients from wastewater and develop markets for algae biomass based on its characteristics. Dr. Kumar has served on the editorial board of Journal of Environmental Quality and Agronomy Journal and he is the Past-Chair of Soil and Environmental Quality Division of Soil Science Society of America and American Society of Agronomy. Dr. Kumar has published over 70 research articles/book chapters and has served on many federal grant review panels.
